Compare total setup requirements
Check the current manufacturer page for power, Wi-Fi requirements, storage, and any subscription needed for saved clips or alerts. Record the model and date you checked. A low purchase price may not reflect the cost of the features you intend to use.
Measure the installation spot, including space for the cord. Route cables securely and keep the device out of chewing reach. Verify that it can see the relevant area without unnecessarily recording neighbors, shared spaces, or private household activities.
Look beyond the feature list
Ask whether household members and caregivers are comfortable with recording. Review account access, security updates, and deletion controls before using the device. Use the protections the manufacturer provides and follow its setup instructions.
Treat two-way audio and dispensing features as optional. A dog’s response may differ from what advertising suggests. Introduce the device while present and observe whether sounds or movement cause concern.
Create a response plan
Decide who can enter the home if the camera shows a problem. Check what happens when the internet or power fails. An alert without someone able to respond may offer less practical value than you expect.
